Hi! I'm Karen Wu, an eighth grader from California. I love all kinds of writing. It's a great way to be able to express myself to others. I was a national gold medalist in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. At my old school, I put together the annual literary magazine and wrote for the school newspaper. Journalism is one of my favorite types of writing because I think it's important that the public is well-informed. Beyond that, I also help organize fundraisers for my school and attend math club.

What does Actions in Spotlight mean to you, and why is it important for you to promote the sustainable development goals?

Actions in Spotlight is an amazing platform for young people to express their voices. I love exercising my creativity and doing what I enjoy to make the world a better place. Writing for Actions in Spotlight has also allowed me to educate myself on different issues people around the world face. I believe the sustainable development goals represent progress for everyone and I want to do my part in contributing to that.

What has been your favorite submission so far? What was it about and what was the story behind your work?

The most meaningful work to me is How Poverty Affects Children. Education is very important to my family and me. I've always felt incredibly grateful that I can receive a quality education in a good environment because I believe that education is important in achieving a fulfilled and stable life. However, not everyone around the world has the same opportunities. I hope that Actions in Spotlight can contribute to equalizing education.

What are your goals for the future? How do you think Actions in Spotlight plays into these goals?

While I'm still testing to see what career fits for me, I know for certain that I want to use my writing abilities to reach out to people. Actions in Spotlight allows me to begin reaching out. Writing pieces monthly has also helped me hone and practice my writing skills.
