For a Dying World

By Karen Wu

a paw steps forwards

soft, the rich earth

that clutches tight

a wing flutters

with the wind

in the endless sky

surely unconquerable

when home is torn down

to the shriek of machines

when the gunfire echoes

still trying

wanting to

live
